Burnt End of a Prayer
I said a prayer with a match in my fingers
Got about as far as the flame
Then the leaf took over and the words got thinner
And I called that talking to my name
Rye in the other hand, cheap and honest
Warming like a coal I could swallow
I ain't sure if I was asking or telling
I just know the room felt less hollow
Burnt end of a prayer, that's my Amen
Smoke for the spirit, whiskey for the flesh
I don't get clean. I get quieter
And I call that a kind of rest
Ceiling's got a stain like a old baptism
Water that came when I wasn't here
I sit under it like it still might mean something
Draw slow. Pour slower. Disappear
If God wants poetry he came to the wrong stool
I got gravel and a little red coal
If he wants a honest man in a bad room
He can take me as a unfinished soul
Burnt end of a prayer, that's my Amen
Smoke for the spirit, whiskey for the flesh
I don't get clean. I get quieter
And I call that a kind of rest
